  This was more than a depressing ride home. It was surrender. Aiden was joining the rest of the world in giving up on his sister.

  He returned the phone to his FBI rescuer. “Agent Harris — please! I can’t leave now. There are three rest stops Meg hit that I haven’t checked yet. You can come with me. Even keep me handcuffed! But I can’t sacrifice the last shot at picking up her trail.”

  Harris tried to be kind. “Look, I want to find her, too. But there really is no trail. Besides, the National Weather Service is predicting a big blizzard for these mountains. If we don’t get out, we could be stuck for days. Then, if a real lead comes in, we’ll be powerless to follow it.”

  Aiden knew that any blizzard that might be coming could never match the storm in his tormented brain.

  Aw, Meg, where are you?

  Huddled in her meager shelter deep in the mountains, Meg Falconer peered through her pine canopy and watched a single snowflake drift to the ground….
